Unfortunately, there is no cure-all that can treat baldness for good. However, there has been a series of developments in medicine to minimize hair loss and prevent total baldness.
There are four kinds of medications in the market which have been formulated to prevent and reduce hair loss that have been FDA (or U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved.
These medications need to be taken continuously or for as long as you want to prevent excessive hair loss. If you discontinue taking these medications, excessive hair loss will take place once more.
4 Medical Treatments to Prevent and Cure Hair Loss
1. Minoxidil (trade name Rogaine)
Minoxidil can be bought over the counter. It is in liquid form and is applied on your scalp two times each day. What it does is it will stimulate the hair follicle to boost hair growth, increase the thickness of the hair shaft, increase the time in the Anagen or the Growth Phase, and delay the Telogen or Falling-out Phase. Males are recommended to use a 5 percent dosage, while females are recommended the 2 percent dosage, because it has been reported that some females start to grow facial hair when they use the 5 percent dosage.
2. Finasteride (trade name Propecia)
Finasteride is a prescription oral medication in the form of a pill. What it does is it prevents DHT from being produced by the body. It is a medication that is only meant for males as it has no effect on females and may even lead to birth defects if taken by a pregnant woman.
The effectiveness of Finasteride is about 90 percent in reducing hair loss, and 65 percent in the stimulation of new hair growth. However, its side effect is reduced libido.
If you are diagnosed with Alopecia Areata, then the medication that is usually prescribed is a corticosteroid injection into the scalp. This treatment will stimulate hair growth, which can be observed about 4 weeks after the start of the treatment. Corticosteroids in the form of topical creams can also be used, but are not as effective as the injections.
4. Anthralin (trade name Drithocreme)
Anthralin is available in topical cream form and can also be used to treat alopecia areata. It is applied daily onto the scalp and then rinsed off. The effectiveness of this type of treatment in stimulating new hair growth is 25 percent, with the effects taking place within 6 months of continuous use.
Apart from these medical treatments (which all of them contain chemical substances having negative side effects) there is a natural hair loss treatment developed by a group of researchers from University of Oslo, Norway. This all-natural hair loss supplement is named Har Vokse and has been proven to stop hair loss and growth new hair for its customers.
